The DAFI program (Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative) is the higher-education scholarship program of UNHCR, the United Nations’ refugee agency. Since 1992, DAFI has enabled more than 15,500 gifted refugees to study at universities and colleges through scholarships.
The DAFI program offers scholarships for undergraduate refugee students that cover a wide range of expenses for academic study, from tuition fees and study materials to food, transportation, accommodation and other allowances. To support their academic achievements and skill development, DAFI scholars receive additional support through close monitoring, and academic preparatory and language classes based on students’ needs, as well as mentoring and networking opportunities.
Albert Einstein (1879-1955) was a renowned physicist and educator who made significant contributions to the field of science and education. Born in Germany, Einstein developed an early love for learning and a strong curiosity about the world around him. He went on to study physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, where he was awarded a PhD in 1905.
Einstein’s theories and discoveries, including the theory of general relativity and the famous equation E=mc^2, helped to revolutionize our understanding of the universe and cemented his place as one of the greatest scientists of all time.
In addition to his scientific contributions, Einstein was also a dedicated educator who believed in the power of education to change the world. He spent much of his later years traveling and lecturing, sharing his insights and knowledge with students and fellow scientists.
Einstein’s educational philosophy was centered around the idea that learning should be interactive and collaborative, and that students should be encouraged to question and think critically. He believed that everyone had the potential to be a great learner, and that education should be accessible to all, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Today, Einstein’s legacy continues to inspire students and educators around the world, and his ideas about education are still studied and revered. He remains an icon of scientific brilliance and a symbol of the power of education to change the world.
Undergraduate Scholarship:
a) The DAFI Programme sponsors in principal the first degree at a university level, e.g. Bachelor (BSc, BA) or “higher diploma” (two to three years). The ‘diplome supérieure’ or ‘diplome d’état supérieure’ (three years) may be considered an equivalent degree, provided they are of a higher level and have a professional orientation.
b) This form of study, by definition, excludes informal vocational and skills-training courses, but includes para-professional training provided at polytechnic institutions and higher technical colleges.
c) UNHCR will continue to insist that only those candidates are selected for DAFI who intend to study a subject that is relevant to the job market, that is, with a high probability of employment, such as computer studies, engineering, social work, paramedical and teaching professions etc.; and which contributes to the rehabilitation and development of the community and society at large.
The scholarship amount covers tuition fee, books allowance and travel allowance.
a) Fields of study such as languages (if not closely linked to teacher training), philosophy, fine arts and religious studies cannot be sponsored under DAFI.
b) Post-graduate studies (e.g. M.A., M.Sc., some postgraduate Diploma courses) are generally not supported under the regular DAFI Programme.
DAFI support will initiate from the date of agreement signing with the student and will extend for the remainder duration of the program.
DAFI scholarship will support students who are enrolled in educational institutions that are recognized by HEC or registered with relevant government departments.
DAFI scholarship program supports students who has a valid refugee status only. Therefore, students who has a POR card or a UNHCR card are supported by DAFI scholarship program.
After selection for DAFI scholarship, the students are provided skill development trainings that are essential for their academic performance as well as benefits them in the professional life. In addition, educational counselling sessions are conducted with each student.
Furthermore, Inspire Pakistan shares other opportunities that will enable the students to develop their skills.
